The Norwegian Veterinary Institute is a national biomedical research institute, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries and the Norwegian Research Council to provide independent, research-based advisory support to the governing authorities in the fields of terrestrial and aquatic animal health and food safety.

The Norwegian Veterinary Institute has been a member of the SAFE consortium since the last quarter of 2015.

The institute has 320 employees of which 150 are scientific staff and provides diagnostic services from its central laboratory in Oslo and its regional laboratories in the cities of Sandnes, Bergen, Trondheim, Harstad and Tromsø.
