IBA (Romania)

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter PDF Print E-mail

IBA is a non-academic public-owned self-financing research organisation conducting food and nutritional research, product and technology development, lifelong learning programmes, and small-scale production of special foods. As one of the most prominent RTD entities within the country, IBA plays an important role in developing national food policies by providing expert advice to authorities.

IBA has been a member of the SAFE consortium since January 2010.

IBA holds ISO17025 accreditation for assessing quality and safety of foodstuffs and functions as a national reference laboratory on several food safety and quality issues (e.g. GMOs, food contact materials, crop rating), and as a notification body for botanical food supplements. The National Food for Life Platform was initiated and is being coordinated by IBA, which also functions as a National Contact Point for the KBBE FP7 Programme. IBA is member in several European associations apart from the SAFE Consortium, such as ISEKI Food, FOODforce and International Association for Cereal Science and Technology and is a member of several industry and professional associations (e.g. ASIAR, Romanian Food Science Association,
ROMALIMENTA, Romanian Food Industry Association, ROMPAN, Romanian Milling and Baking Industry Association). Being 100% self-financed, IBA had to develop into an industry-oriented research organisation, accessing both public funding, via grant competitions, and private funding, through industry-funded product/technology development projects. Moreover, IBA develops and produces foods for people with special nutritional needs in its several micro-production plants. IBA has extensive experience in food safety research, nutrition and food policy research, consumer sciences and development of
functional/special foods, as demonstrated by the participation in complex research projects over the last 10 years.
