  • SAFE speakers at EFSA Risk Assessment Research Assembly. 7 Feb 2018

    The President of the SAFE consortium Executive Board, Begoña Pérez Villarreal of AZTI, and past SAFE consortium Secretary General, past president of the SAFE Executive Board and current Executive Board member, Oddur M. Gunnarsson of Matis Ltd. are invited speakers at the 2018 EFSA Event on Risk Assessment taking place in Utrecht (NL) on 7 February 2018.

    This event will bring together research funders, policy/decision makers and leading food safety organisations.

    The aim of the event is to stimulate new partnerships in food safety risk assessment research to safeguard public health and highlight the importance of public funding.

  • SAFE Special Issue in TIFS. Spring 2018

    SAFE consortium members will publish a Special Issue of Trends in Food Science &Technology in spring 2018.

    Keeping Food Safety on the Agenda for 15 Years: The SAFE Consortium

    There are five food safety themes in the Special Issue, each led by a SAFE member:

    1. The Circular Bioeconomy, by Matis Ltd in Iceland
    2. Safe Nutrients, by IBA in Romania
    3. Emerging Microbial Threats, by CNR-DiSBA in Italy
    4. Chemical Hazards, by AZTI in Spain
    5. Risk Communication, by Nofima in Norway

    The release EVENT will take place in Brussels in spring 2018. Stay tuned for further information.

Membership in the European Association for Food Safety, SAFE consortium is open to any organisation that


1. provides research, development & innovation or other technology-related services related to food safety.

2. is managerially independent.

3. is of high scientific excellence.

4. wants to participate in the SAFE mission of Keeping Food Safety on the Agenda

Membership categories

SAFE consortium has two member categories:

1. Full members

Organisations that do food safety research, development & innovation or other technology-related services as their predominant activity.

These may be societies or associations (national or international); public or private research institutes; government food safety authorities; or universities or faculties, departments and/or research groups within them.

2. Associate members

Food industry and industry associations that have activities related to food safety. Associate members enjoy all benefits of full SAFE membership except i) they may not serve on the SAFE Executive Board and ii) they may not vote at SAFE member meetings.

All scientific employees of SAFE member institutes may fully participate in SAFE initiatives.
Membership fees

1. Full Members:

  • €2000/year for large organisations, more than 250 scientific employees
  • €1000/year for small organisations, 250 or less scientific employees

2. Associate Members:

  • €4000/year for large organisations, more than 250 scientific employees
  • €2000/year for small organisations, 250 or less scientific employees
The demands for membership

a) the member institute or research group should have a scientific integrity guaranteed by the unlimited right to publish in the public interest about food safety issues and

b) the member institute should show academic quality, proven by publications in international scientific journals.
